Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) and her two young children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), live in a remote Victorian country house on a desolate Channel Island in 1945. The children suffer from a rare photosensitivity, a condition that requires the house to be kept in near-total darkness, with thick curtains drawn and doors locked. This oppressive atmosphere immediately establishes a sense of unease and isolation, setting the stage for the supernatural events that begin to unfold.
As the film progresses, the arrival of three new servants—the mysterious housekeeper Mrs. Mills (Fionnula Flanagan), gardener Mr. Tuttle (Eric Sykes), and mute maid Lydia (Elaine Cassidy)—coincides with increasingly unsettling occurrences.
